Italy Through Film: The Golden Door

italythrufilmkatelynm:

When we first started to watch this movie I was very confused by what was happening. There was an older woman who was tied up, or something? And then there were men on what looked like a rocky mountain, but I was so confused by what was happening.

Then we fast forwarded the film it was…

I couldn’t figure out a theme in the movie, only seeing a few select clips, maybe it was something about discrimination and the struggle of immigrants during this period of time? I think the nurse what the nurse was saying to the English lady was her being discriminatory that an English woman could possibly be married or with an Italian man. I don’t know why that would be a bad thing, other than the fact that they seemed to treat her better because she spoke English and donned proper English clothing. I would definitely continue watching the film, it seemed very interesting!

Italy Thru Film- Lindsay Laporte: The Golden Door

italythrufilm:

Watching only little sections of this movie mae it somewhat onfusing and hard to follow.

However, I thought it was absolutely horrible how the Italians were treated at Ellis island. They weren’t treated as human beings at all- getting pricked ad prodded. Most of them didn’t even know what was…

I also believe it was ridiculous that they thought being unintelligent was hereditary, that part did seem extremely discriminatory, and rude! I like that you brought up being unaware of how poorly immigrants were treated on Ellis Island, I was completely unaware of this behavior and was surprised to see how Americans poked and prodded these poor people who had already made a long and tiresome journey.

James Paleo's Italy Through Film Blog: Blog Entry #10 On the Subject of Bread and Chocolate and the Golden Door

italythrufilmjpaleologopoulos:

This week, our classroom saw the 1974 comedy film Bread and Chocolate directed by Franco Brusati.

Despite only seeing the key scenes of the film, stressing the plight of the migrant worker Nino, I have come to the conclusion that this is perhaps my favorite comedy of the year so far. It puts a..

The Italians were truly subjected to many issues during this immigration situation. They struggle between the native Italians and the customs agents on Ellis Island. The tests seemed pretty standard but the Italian family truly seemed unaware that test such as these occur. What did you think of the young boy refusing to be subjected to the strip search, i thought that was a little ridiculous of the Americans to be so harsh on him.

Italy Through Film: Bread and Chocolate

italythrufilm-jesskillam:

On Tuesday, we watched two clips from the Italian film Bread and Chocolate. This film talked a lot about emigration in Italy (leaving one’s own country in order to settle permanently in another). It is hard to talk about specifics concerning this theme from just these clips, but you are still…

I thought it was interesting how the man discovered the girl, and then walked right next to the killer without the girl as well, all he had to do was turn left! I mean what ended up happening with that part of the movie? Little girl murdered, and no one cares… peculiar.. You’re right that the movie is quite confusing without being seen in its entirety. The protagonist also seems to be trying to conform the whole time, but manages to ALWAYS stick out (note the bottle job on his “do”). The film seemed to be quite humorous (sans the “murder thing”) but i would definitely be interested in viewing the rest of the film.

Italy Through Film: Bread and Chocolate

italythrufilmkatelynm:

We only got to watch a few clips from the movie, however from what I saw it was very disturbing. The beginning of the movie shows a man trying to play soccer with a child but then he finds a dead woman in the woods. It was a little weird how he was right next to the killer, (someone who looks who…

He truly seemed to not fit in with society! I completely agree with you! He failed as a waiter, and when he admired the Germans he tried to fit in by dying his hair. He never seemed to fit in anywhere. I personally was confused by the crazy behavior of the chicken farmers, they were literally insane, and the graphic scenes with the chicken blood were also pretty vulgar!

Italy Thru Film- Lindsay Laporte: Bread and Chocolate

italythrufilm:

This was by far the weirdest film we’ve watched so far.

I was slightly confused about some parts, but that just made it more interesting.

I didn’t really like how the film began with the discovery of a dead child.

I think its funny when the main character fails as a waiter, but I am not a big…

I agree that this film by far is the most confusing we have seen by far, it was extremely wild- especially the demeanor of the people at the chicken coop- they are all three scoops away from being a whole cup of crazy. I found the protagonist, the waiter extremely amusing as a waiter as well- i wonder how long he had been in the position, nevertheless it was extremely comical. When he dyed his hair to look German, priceless.

The Golden Door

This film focuses on Italian immigration to the United States.. The beginning of the film seems to begin in the sprawling hills of Italy, two girls are talking to an older woman about how her and her friend were promised to two rich American men, and then shows her a picture of a giant onion on a cart. The movie is extremely bizzare, a woman is tied up and tells them “to get rid of it” but you never really comprehend what they’re getting rid of.

This film is extremely peculiar, the setting is extremely mountainous, rocky, and permanently covered in fog, seems like a depressing place to live.

We then skipped further into the scene, when the family decides to leave and immigrate to the United States. The scene began at Ellis Island when they first arrive in America. It’s almost like a cattle call there, they all have numbers, and are treated as cattle. They put a cross on the grandmother when she doesn’t konw what day it is- possibly a mark incompetency. The grandmother also seems to be difficult and treated worse by the immigration because of this. They have the people in these metal barred sections, it literally looked like a horse ranch.

They then subject the immigrants to health examinations, they take a man’s son away because he refuses to take of his pants- very bizzare situation. And then the grandmother is subjected to an examination and she flips out.

The woman next to her is revealed as English and the nurse tells the patient she will be questioned because she’s an English woman traveling with Italians. Why though?

All in all i was a little confused by the movie, but found it interesting to see the tests they were subjected to by immigration officials, and found it appalling, I know Iwouldnt want to be treated that way.

Bread and Chocolate.

We only watched some clips from this movie, but from the beginning was slightly disturbing when the man found the little girl murdered in the middle of the woods, and it is unsettling when he walks right up beside the killer (a priest holding a jump rope?) in the woods and does not even notice him. What became confusing for me is when he was hailing someone to pull over and the men in the car seemed to frighten him, it was unclear who specifically they were. The film seemed to talk about emigration- internally within Italy as well- but we only saw clips so it is hard to give concrete examples.

We find out the man who discovers the young girl is a waiter in a fancy restuarant, and someone seems to be stealing (there is a fish in the chamber of the toilet, he gives it to a coworker to bring back, but the friend comically has sausage links hanging out of the back of his pants- he was obviously stealing. The entire scene is a comic relief from him finding the young girl murdered- the funniest part was when he was ripping the orange apart with his mouth while a woman watched horrified and then he served it to a customer.

Saw the Grand Marnier on the serving table, how French!

The setting of the restaurant is extremely elegant, but the waiters always seem to be screwing something up (the waiter throwing the meat in the fancy older woman’s soup and splashing all over her, to the main character not pulling out the seat for the American woman who came with the Italian business man.

We skipped ahead after he was fired from the restuarant when he’s working in argiculture, and the farmers or chicken raisers are all extremely strange; i cant tell if this is a horror or a comedy. Is everyone in in Italy crazy in this film- the little boy crowing like a chicken?!?! The Neorealist scene of all the Germans- and the men were creeping was interesting..

Was everyone else as confused about this movie as I was? thoughts?

The Night of the Shooting Stars

I was prepared for another depressing film, after the past few we’ve viewed. The film is a narrative of a women’s life during WWII, and how she fled from the Germans.  It seems like the Italians only focus on WWII or the Depression- how about a light comedy Italy! The overall flow of the film was confusing- the sliding between scenes thoroughly bothered me, and made the film hard to enjoy.

The film walked a fine line between being a neorealist film, and not one at all. It had the elements of neorealism with the gritty-ness and is filmed sort of like a documentary however it isn’t like neorealism in the sense that the narrator is present, and it is flashbacks in a dream like sequence.

The fact that the movie in part was told by a six year old was annoying- children ages 5-12 generally annoy me- and she was no exception.

This movie seemed to also a dig at the Americans- it made us look like dumpy pigs- especially the scene where the American solider blew up the used condom in front of the two young girls- disgusting.

However I did enjoy the love story between Concetta and Galvano and liked watching the progression of their relationship. The scene with the watermelon- unnecessary.

Overall I would give the movie a 5 out of 10, not the worst movie I’ve ever seen, but definitely not the best.
